Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - Museum of Modern Art - 16.10.1998 São Paulo, Brazil - Jockey Club - 17.10.1998 Portuguese version Kraftwerk will play for the first time in South America at Free Jazz Festival 98 - Brazil next october in two cities, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. At the same nights Massive Attack will play in the same place but in a different stage after the end of Kraftwerk concert. The show is programed to start at 21:30, the tickets will be available at the middle of September and will cost around US$ 40. The production of the festival said that a date in Mexico was scheduled, but because of the demands of the band, this date was cancelled. So the concerts in Brazil and Argentina will be the only ones in South America. Six tons of equipment will fly to Brazil to bring the complete show and of course the robots will come. That's the translation of the text: Kraftwerk says yes Ralf & Florian answered in a laconic form the questionary sent by Folha de Sao Paulo. Five of the eight questions was answered with "yes". Some answers: Folha: Will you play new songs? Are you planning a new album? KW: Yes. Folha: Considering KW influence in pop music, is it possible to say that pop today are permeated by a german identity? KW: We are citizens of the world with a german cultural appetizer. Folha: If you could invent a perfect machine to create music, how it looks like? KW: Kling Klang studio. 07.09.1998 The brazilian newspaper O Estado de São Paulo published two articles about Kraftwerk. The first one (on September 4th), signed by Ricardo Alexandre is a one page article with photos from Autobahn, Computer World, Electric Cafe and The Mix albums sleeves and the promo photo of this page. It's a nice and synthetic history of the band, with just one mistake: until Luton, KW did not play since 1993 and not 1995 like the article says. The second and more interesting one was wrote by Jotabê Medeiros. He made an interview with Ralf Hütter by phone from Düsseldorf on September 3th (believe or not). These are Ralf's points (translated by me - copyright by O Estado de Sao Paulo): "We are still interested in all fields of electronic art, videos, films, synthetic voices and digital instruments" "We do this in a multicultural perspective, something who break language and culture barriers, something that is not restricted in musical universe" "It's our first time in Brazil, and I'm so curious. We played in hole world, but never in South America... we was in communication into different people, but music is universal" "We talk to writers, artists, we are not restricted to a single thought, like North Americans" "I like hip-hop, their improvisation and the inspiration in black music and connecting extremes" Don't exist any tape with KW playing Stockhausen or Stockhausen palying KW. "Our interest in Stockhausen was in a prospective way, we heared many times his experiences in a Köln radio station and was fascinating his use of street sound and the approach of industrial situation". He told that they never studied with Stockhausen at Darmstadt School. "Long time no see David Bowie, but he traveled to Berlin and I meet him in London and talked a little, he's a friend" The best one: he told the new record is scheduled for the next year, and will have the new songs they are playing at the tour. The final one: "Maybe we could meet and talk after brazilian concert. It's not confortable talk by telephone". 05.09.1998 The concert in Buenos Aires, Argentina (at Obras Sanitarias Stadium) is confirmed. Check official Kraftwerk page and our page. 04.09.1998 Brazilian press had published that the tickets for Free Jazz Festival will be available next September, 16th, but festival production didn't confirm this information for me. They told that they have no date to sell yet. 10.08.1998 Many people ask me: why Kraftwerk will play at a Jazz Festival? Free is a brand of cigarette in Brazil. Of course the name of the festival is a joke between the brand of cigarette and the jazz style called Free Jazz. At the beginning, the festival had only tradicional jazz artists. Some years ago, it became a more ecletical festival. Last year we had Goldie and Neneh Cherry. Two years ago played here Björk and 808 State. Something like Montreaux Jazz Festival makes long time ago. This year is the 13th edition of Free Jazz Festival. 08.08.1998 It's hard to find any brazilian Kraftwerk CD releases except The Mix. Distributors said that all of them are out of print. Maybe some new issues are planned? It would be interesting to EMI Brazil put at the market a lot of releases. It would increase sales. 06.08.1998 Brazilian press gives Free Jazz 98 like a mix of different influences, with the headline of Kraftwerk. Articles can be found at some newspapers. From Sao Paulo: O Estado de Sao Paulo (two articles), Folha de Sao Paulo and Jornal da Tarde. From Rio de Janeiro: O Globo and Jornal do Brasil. Curitiba: Gazeta do Povo. Porto Alegre: Correio do Povo and Zero Hora. At night TV Cultura shows on Metropolis program (an art and varieties daily program) images of press meeting and excerpts of New Luton Song video. 05.08.1998 Kraftwerk press release from Free Jazz Festival 98 has some mistakes, like first release being Highrail (1971) and second one Var (1972). It doesn't say that Wolfgang Flür and Karl Bartos left the band. Kraftwerk Promo Picture |
